Why water type matters

Water is the default peptide solvent, and "water" spans a range of specifications: sterility, ionic content, organic residues, and preservatives all differ by grade. The wrong grade adds variables — endotoxin, conductivity, preservative interference — to experiments that assume a clean solvent. For in-vitro laboratory work, the choice is a reagent decision like any other.

Sterile water (water for injection)

Sterile water is purified, sterilized, and dispensed single-use: no preservative, no buffer. It is the cleanest default for peptide solutions used immediately. Its limitation is exactly its purity — with no antimicrobial protection, a contaminated multi-use stock grows organisms freely, so opened aliquots are used promptly or discarded.

Bacteriostatic water

Sterile water plus 0.9% benzyl alcohol (mechanism and lab rules in bacteriostatic water for lab use). The preservative trades absolute additive purity for a longer useful life after first entry — the standard choice for research stocks accessed over days to weeks, wherever the assay tolerates the alcohol.

Purified water grades (laboratory water)

ISO 3696 grades water I-III by conductivity, organic content, and silica. Grade I (18.2 MΩ·cm, ultra-pure) is analytical-grade water from purification systems; it is not sterile, so it is a preparation solvent for immediate process use rather than a multi-day storage medium. Grade II/III serve glassware rinsing and general duties. System water is for making solutions now; sealed sterile products are for storing them.

Decision sketch: single-use solution today → sterile water. Multi-use stock over days → bacteriostatic water (if the assay tolerates benzyl alcohol).
